Bulgaria is situated in the South Eastern part of Europe, in the Eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The routes connecting Europe with Asia and Africa have been crossing the territory of the country for hundreds of years. Four common European transportation corridors connecting Western and Eastern Europe with the Eastern and Southern parts of the continent cross each other here. Sparky Power Tools is located in Lovech, which is a couple of hour’s distance from Sofia, capital of Bulgaria. Its location was originally part of a grand central plan, co-ordinated with the most of the Eastern Block. The original function of the factory was to make standard AC electric motors and commutators for electric motors and supply these components to other manufacturing centres.
In 1966 the factory entered into a licensing arrangement with AEG to produce power tools for the Eastern block countries market. Manufacturing resources were developed at this time to make tools that met the needs of the market in East Europe and the former Soviet Union and a hefty export trade was developed to service the middle east.
With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the whole economic system essentially collapsed through Eastern Europe. Exchange rates and currency problems meant that even successful manufacturing operators got into difficulties. Despite these problems, some entrepreneurs could see the potential of these “sleeping giants” and one such was the Sparky Group based in Germany, In 1996 they purchased the company from the Bulgarian Government and started to invest, using western investment backed by German Bankers.
