A Visit To Lessmann GmbH
By Editor Brian Hall
I recently visited Lessmann GmbH to see some of the ways in which a traditional family owned and run business is competing with imports from overseas. Before we address that issue though, here is a little background about the company’s history of success.
The original brush making company involving the Lessmann family was founded in 1926 by Johann Lessmann and Emil Tannert and as it was located in Würbenthal/ Sudetenland (Now in the Czech republic) it was known as Würbenthaler
Drahtbürsten Industrie. (The Würbenthal Wirebrush Company).
Following the upheaval of the Second World War, The Lessmann family moved to Oettingen and a new company was formed by Johann Lessmann and his children Edgar and Traudel. Initially, the business was conducted from a building where the family lived “over the shop” in an apartment while the manufacturing business was conducted on the ground and first floors.
In 1963, Johann Lessmann died and the management of the business continued under the leadership of Edgar Lessmann and sales reached 1 million DM for the first time. The company was extended by adding a new office and warehouse in l978. By l990 the company had acquired full limited company status with the launch of Lessmann GmbH and the production facilities were further extended in 1992. In 1993, the responsibility for managing the company passed to Jürgen and Dieter Lessmann. Three years later, the company’s growth enabled it to take over the business of Hartmann and Klein of Kreutztal who had a complimentary range of wire brush products, esp. wheels and cups made from crimped wire .
Production for both companies was concentrated in the Oettingen facility in 2002 with the further enlargement of the production plant. With all these advances Lessmann GmbH remains a modern family owned business producing innovative wire and power brushes to a high quality, trading throughout the world.
The quality of Lessmann products starts with design and construction, which is under the direction of Jürgen Lessmann (Production Manager) and quality is paramount. By continually controlling materials and improving brushes using the latest technology a steady improvement and maintenance of high quality is assured. Product life is optimised by attention to fully traceable material supplies and high precision when it comes to manufacturing and balancing of high speed rotary industrial brushes.
All this quality, of course, is backed up by an unsurpassed attention to detail when it comes to co-ordinating delivery and meeting customer expectations. Sales and administration are under the direction of Dieter Lessmann. With this management team, Lessmann GmbH prides itself in its flexibility and ability to meet customer requirements in full. Advice is constantly available from trained and motivated staff, who are able to offer products at a very attractive price performance combination. Packaging is now state of the art and meets all environmental concerns as well as providing customer information, meeting all requirements. Finished and packaged products are available in a wide range of display options and the company can supply all kinds of presentational support and informational materials, as well as providing merchandise advice for the trade.
Lessmann products are proudly made in Germany and have a continuous programme of launching new products which meet customer requirements, even with specialised products. A short delivery time is assured by using advanced design and testing techniques and the company has the capability of delivering several million brushes a year and currently has more than 10,000 designs available in either batch or line production. The company now employs over 125 staff who are all committed to outstanding quality and delivery performance.
The original growth of the company was based on hand brushes but nowadays this has been added to in the form of brooms and scrubs, interior brushes (twisted in wire), special brushes and highly technical knotted brushes, wheel brushes, cup brushes and shank brushes. The list of applications for Lessmann products is innumerable and includes all aspects of metal working, ship building, automotive as well as foundries, pipe line construction, glass industries and general construction. Turnover for Lessmann GmbH is over 9 million Euros and almost 40% of its products are exported to more than 50 countries.
When it comes to powered cup brushes and flat knotted power brushes, Lessman has made massive investments in its future capacity to ensure outstanding quality. Lessmann doesn’t simply use proprietory equipment. Using the experience and knowledge gained from three generations of brushmakers, Lessmann production uses many numerically controlled production machines as well as other automatic production facilities to ensure competitiveness, quality and productivity.
The key to success lies in continuing advances in automation. The Lessmann factory has some of the most modern machines imaginable. This is the way in which Lessmann brushes can compete world-wide. Despite massive quality advances in hi-tech power brushes, Lessmann is still highly competitive with wire filled hand brushes despite intense competition from Asian sources. Lessmann GmbH is fully registered in accordance with ISO 9001 and its quality and traceability of materials means that customers can rely on Lessmann for all their needs.
