For specialist jobs most workmen know you can't beat a specialist supplier. The Fixings & Powertool Center in Redhill, Surrey has an enviable reputation, not only for the quality of the products it supplies but also for the knowledgeable staff and excellent, expert, service it gives.
Its business is made up of roughly sixty percent fixings and forty percent power and hand tools.
Being located in Redhill, the company is closely located to Gatwick, so many customers are contractors or service companies involved in the ongoing business of keeping the airport running. The Fixings & Powertool Center was founded by Charles Dunn, who was also on the board of THS. They moved to their current large premises almost 17 years ago.
When Charles died seven years ago aged only 58 the current company directors purchased the business. The management owner team who had all been working for Charles for a number of years prior to his unexpected death consist of David Cooper - Managing director, Simon Bradbury - accounts, Richard Humphrey - showroom, Garry Walker - facilities and Ralph Whitehead - purchasing.
With an average experience of 19 years selling tools and consumables for the construction industry, the company's team of ten specialists are able to offer a service, along with a carefully selected product range and competitive prices second to none.
With its well-founded reputation as an expert supplier it is no surprise that one of the key features of the Fixings and Powertool Center's operation is its Information Centre where the staff handle all personal and telephone enquiries from customers. A continuous training programme keeps staff abreast of the latest products and techniques, whilst a comprehensive database containing detailed technical specifications of thousands of products is constantly updated to ensure customers are given accurate information.
"Our staff have an excellent working knowledge of our product range which enables them to give customers sound advice, which sets us apart from many of our competitors," says Managing Director, David Cooper.
The company has a "try before you buy" policy with as many of its products as practicably possible which can be done in the fully equipped workshop, or if they prefer a site test can be arranged.
In the workshop staff are also on hand to service and repair all makes of power tools quickly and reliably. All parts and workmanship are fully guaranteed. The Fixings and Powertool Center also do everything possible to ensure its customers get the maximum value from any tool they invest in. To this end the company's workshop staff are able to re-sharpen and re-forge, offering a service for saw and planer blades, router cutters,
TCT cutters and hammer steels.
Over the years the company has built up an impressive list of suppliers, finding the right range of products to meet customers needs, and always ensuring that quality was a key factor in any product stocked.
Looking at the brand names stocked at the Fixings and Powertool Center it is clear to see the high standards the company adheres to. Brands stocked include DeWalt, Bosch, Hitatchi, Makita, Festool,Trend, Metabo and Fein as well as ranges from Toolbank ,Harrison and Clough and Draper. The company's connection with THS has always been an important factor in its success. Three years ago it received the Member of the Year Award. Nowadays it makes purchases in excess of a million pounds per annum through the THS.
The Fixings and Powertool Center also deliver and providing an order is received by mid-afternoon, the company is able to deliver the next day to almost any location on the UK mainland and in most cases this service is offered completely free of charge.
The company values all its customers and knows that in the fixings and tool industry the patronage of a small business is as important as that of a multi-national. This is why it offers accounts to prospective customers, whether they are one man bands or big name organizations. In its first month it had a turn over of £30,000, now that amount is nearer £300,000 and with an expanding external sales force this figure is set to rise.
The Fixings and Powertool Center places a high value on sharing a good working knowledge of its products with the customer and this is communicated at the annual Open Days where the company's suppliers are invited to come and promote and demonstrate their products. This year the Open Days are being held on the 6th and 7th of July at the showrooms on the A23 in Redhill.
